Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche: God is dead, and this guy killed him

Nietzsche was one of the most radical philosophers of the nineteenth century. He is famous for his provocative style of writing, which not only explains his ideas, but take the reader on a journey into his twisted and lavish mind. Credited as one of the first existentialists, Nietzsche’s criticisms on culture, religion and morality are considered some of the most substantial works of his century. It’s time to learn about one of history’s most interesting philosophers.

Early Life

Nietzsche first started out as a Philologist — in that time period Philology had to do with translating classical and biblical texts. Nietzsche entered More >

Fate and Free Will: Whose side are you on?

In the world today it’s almost impossible to view a life in which we cannot control. We have so many options on a day-to-day basis that our choices seem limitless, but are they? It’s even been stated that the idea of free will is just an illusion. Needless to say free will is a long debated subject in philosophy.  There are several different views and terms associated with free will. Let’s dive right into it then, Shall we?

Fatalism

The whimsical idea of fatalism coincides with destiny. This means that everything in our lives is predetermined by fate. In other words, everything we have done, are doing More >

Socrates: The founder of western philosophy never wrote a thing?

Socrates is one of the most recognized philosophers of all time. Born in ancient Greece,  he is the founder of western philosophy, which shapes the study in ways even today.  He led an interesting life that led to death as a martyr for his beliefs. In this relatively short post, I’m going to give a little background on the man behind the marble carved statue, and discuss some key features of his life.

He never wrote anything down? – The Socratic Problem

Yes, like the title suggests, we have absolutely no written evidence by Socrates’ hand. Everything we know about him was More >

“I Think, Therefore I am” Confused: What does this Phrase Mean?

We have all heard this phrase in some form or another but even when I, myself, tried typing this little sentence into google to see what would come up, I was surprised to see that no one could give an explanation that wasn’t lengthy or straightforward. So I’m going to try my hand at explaining this classic statement.

Who said it?

Rene Descartes is the man credited to these few words. The quote, originally written in french, comes from The Discourse on Method, but also appears written as the famous Latin, “Cogito ergo sum,” in his  Meditations on First Philosophy, which was an attempt to find foundational truths for knowledge. Idealism, Materialism, Monism, Dualism: More -isms than you can handle!

Idealism and materialism are two opposite ways of looking at the universe. These ideas take the most  basic concepts we can possibly think of and turn them on their ends.  So without further ado, let’s dive right into these concepts.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to cover a little bit of background information before we move on to these two concepts. Since the existence of physical objects is at stake here, we will start by explaining matter.

What is Matter?

So we have to ask ourselves, “What is matter?” This may seem elementary, but it’s not quite that easy to understand. Matter is something More >

Metaphysics: The study that can’t be studied

What is it?

Metaphysics is one of the most difficult to understand topics in philosophy and perhaps one of the oldest. It is also one of the most interesting fields that you can come across because it deals with “the wild stuff,” as I like to call it.

Let me break this down.

The prefix “meta” means beyond. We can see then that the study of metaphysics means beyond physics, or that which could not be studied by means of biology, physics, geology etc…

So what does that mean?

Well, it’s hard to say. I know that’s not the answer you’d love to hear, but we’re dealing with More >
