Berkeley’s Idealism: God has it covered

The Bishop George Berkeley is known as one of the three great British empiricists and for first proposing one of the most interesting and unique ideas in philosophy. What if everything wasn’t really what it seemed? What if the so called matter you were walking on was nothing more than an idea? Sounds like an idea that evolves out of a long night of passing the bong, but it’s not! This concept is actually the central belief behind Berkley’s idealism.

The Framework

Idealism is the belief that reality is solely a collection of ides or  minds — as opposed to materialism (belief More >

Philosophy of Space and Time: A Short Introduction

First of all, I’d like to  apologise for my absence. With classes beginning and being on vacation, I haven’t had much time to do a post. While things may be slow for  bit, I promise to keep writing for you all!

So let’s get into some philosophy, shall we?

Ah, Space and time, a personal favorite of mine that goes back to when I was a boy. This topic relates to that of the very fabric of reality. Space and Time is often a topic of astrophysics and quantum mechanics, but surely you can’t have either of these without the wonders of philosophy! Now, More >

Fate and Free Will: Whose side are you on?

In the world today it’s almost impossible to view a life in which we cannot control. We have so many options on a day-to-day basis that our choices seem limitless, but are they? It’s even been stated that the idea of free will is just an illusion. Needless to say free will is a long debated subject in philosophy.  There are several different views and terms associated with free will. Let’s dive right into it then, Shall we?

Fatalism

The whimsical idea of fatalism coincides with destiny. This means that everything in our lives is predetermined by fate. In other words, everything we have done, are doing More >

Idealism, Materialism, Monism, Dualism: More -isms than you can handle!

Idealism and materialism are two opposite ways of looking at the universe. These ideas take the most  basic concepts we can possibly think of and turn them on their ends.  So without further ado, let’s dive right into these concepts.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to cover a little bit of background information before we move on to these two concepts. Since the existence of physical objects is at stake here, we will start by explaining matter.

What is Matter?

So we have to ask ourselves, “What is matter?” This may seem elementary, but it’s not quite that easy to understand. Matter is something More >

Metaphysics: The study that can’t be studied

What is it?

Metaphysics is one of the most difficult to understand topics in philosophy and perhaps one of the oldest. It is also one of the most interesting fields that you can come across because it deals with “the wild stuff,” as I like to call it.

Let me break this down.

The prefix “meta” means beyond. We can see then that the study of metaphysics means beyond physics, or that which could not be studied by means of biology, physics, geology etc…

So what does that mean?

Well, it’s hard to say. I know that’s not the answer you’d love to hear, but we’re dealing with More >
